About Walton

Overview

William H. Walton Elementary is one of 22 elementary schools in the Jackson Public School District. Walton Elementary School exists to provide learning experiences for boys and girls in grades pre-K through 5th grade. The staff members of this great institution have a tremendous challenge and an awesome responsibility. We must use our talents and abilities to help our students become productive citizens.

School Namesake

William Howard Walton (1897-1958) 

A native to Hinds County, William Howard Walton earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Jackson State College (currently Jackson State University) in 1927 and a second Bachelor of Arts from Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. His academic career includes teaching music and social studies for approximately four years at a high school located in Dyersburg, TN. From there, he returned to The Magnolia State to serve as principal of a rural elementary school in Silver Creek, Mississippi. He was also, at some point during his stay in the area, sought to instruct scholars ranging from 5th-8th grade. Afterwards, he came to the Jackson Public Schools District, where he was a social studies instructor at Jim Hill School (currently Jim Hill High School), which was then situated at 1060 Lynch Street. Sadly, William Walton passed away in 1958.
